Mentees come to me with a diverse array of goals they want to work on. Here are some examples of things we might talk about together...
If you have masked all your life, the task of 'unmasking' can feel daunting. You may not have nourished the identity behind the mask. Together, we can work out manageable steps to familiarising yourself with your unmasked identity.
The world of work and education can be hostile for neurodivergent people. Employers lose out on invaluable talent when autistic staff members cannot flourish in or even access the workplace. In the mentoring space, we can consider how you can get and give the most in studies and in work.
Coping with a world that works against our needs can sometimes break us.
The road out of burnout is a long one, and the road to burnout is too easily trodden. We can talk through strategies that are realistic and helpful to you, in a space where your abilities and restrictions are recognised and respected.
Sometimes it is hard to work out how to manage your various needs at once, or how to recognise and accept your needs at all. So many of us have cooccurring conditions, not to mention additional neurodivergence diagnoses/identities, it can be overwhelming. It can help to talk about any barriers to living well in a constructive and understanding space.
Meeting your sensory needs is hugely important, though many of us have spent years masking and denying these needs. Taking some time to consider what your needs are and how they can be met, in a safe and validating environment, can be pivotal in developing a lifestyle in which you can flourish.
The years leading up to and away from formal diagnosis can be confusing, frustrating, and intensely emotional. Self-diagnosis can likewise raise lots of complicated thoughts and feelings. Wherever you are on that journey - or if you are considering whether to make that journey - we can talk about what diagnosis means or would mean to you, and find steps forward that are positive for you.
To work towards an autistic community that can independently find the lessons that weren't provided to us in our neurotypical upbringings.
To see parent/carer allies grow with their children to provide the neurotype-appropriate upbringings they were never taught to provide.

Like many autistic people, I stepped out of my diagnosis to realise that I had spent my entire life learning (badly!) how to do everything neurotypically, which had led to failure, vulnerability, and the need for more naps than my three-year-old niece. But it wasn't obvious how to unlearn those lessons, and work out how to do things autistically.
Thus the premise of Autistically Mentoring. There is no right or wrong way to be autistic, and the goal is to help us live our lives autistically in the way that is right for us.
